After another week of spending sixty yuan each day looking for a job in the HR market, I fi nally got one. It was an “international business trade clerk”selling bicycle frame-tubes in a Taiwan-funded company with the bosses and the managers all from Taiwan. The interview was as smooth as combing my hair. Unlike the basement, it took place in an offi ce that was equally quiet, but much smaller, much brighter, much more human and much more comfortable. Unlike the single ‘judge’, there were two interviewers. One was Marsh, the manly manager with so-so English and the other a sophisticated girl he borrowed from another company in the same building, whose English was fl uent. There in English I was asked to introduce myself, read the company’s profi le and answer some normal questions including how much salary I would expect.
